Coaching for Athletes

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Therapy and coaching can both support meaningful personal growth, but they serve different purposes.

Therapy is a clinical practice that can diagnose and treat mental health conditions and often supports people in processing psychological distress, trauma, or experiences from the past.

Coaching is not therapy or mental health treatment. Esmeralda's work is focused on helping you deepen your awareness, understand the beliefs and patterns shaping your life, and access more of your own clarity, freedom, and potential.

While the past may naturally arise, the purpose is not to diagnose or treat you. It is to understand what may be operating beneath the surface so you can relate to yourself and your life differently—and create from a place of greater awareness, choice, and self-trust.

Is this a quick fix or prescribed program?

No. This is not a formula, a prescribed program, or a set of steps designed to tell you how to live your life.

It is a deeply personal, guided journey.

Esmeralda does not believe that your answers live outside of you. Her role is not to tell you who to be or what decisions to make, but to create a safe, honest space for deeper inquiry—asking the questions that help you uncover what is true for you, recognize what may be standing in your way, and access parts of yourself that have been hidden beneath old beliefs, patterns, expectations, or protective strategies.

The work unfolds differently for every person because every person arrives with a different life, history, desires, and inner landscape.

There is no predetermined version of who you are supposed to become.

The work is about creating the space for more of who you already are to emerge.

What can I expect from working together?

You can expect a space that is honest, compassionate, challenging, and deeply individualized.

Together, we explore what is happening beneath the surface of your experiences—not simply what you are doing, but the beliefs, emotions, patterns, and protective strategies that may be shaping how you lead, perform, relate, choose, and move through the world.

Through conversation, inquiry, reflection, and greater awareness, you begin to recognize what has been unconsciously driving you and create the capacity to respond differently.

The goal is not simply insight. It is transformation that becomes embodied in the way you actually live.

Who is this work for?

This work is for people who have already built, achieved, performed, or accomplished a great deal—and sense that there is still more of themselves available.

You may be successful on the outside but recognize patterns, pressure, disconnection, or limitations that achievement alone has not resolved. Or you may simply know that the way you have operated until now is no longer the way you want to experience the next chapter of your life.

You do not need to be in crisis to begin this work.

Sometimes the desire for greater freedom, fulfillment, connection, purpose, or potential is enough.

What areas of my life can we work on?

The work is centered on you as a whole person, which means our conversations may naturally move across different areas of your life.

That can include performance, leadership, career, relationships, confidence, identity, purpose, self-trust, emotional patterns, major transitions, creativity, fulfillment, or the way you experience success itself.

These areas rarely exist in isolation. As you begin to transform the way you relate to yourself, the impact often extends into many different parts of your life.

How quickly will I experience change?

Transformation does not follow a fixed timeline.

Some clients experience meaningful shifts in awareness within their first few sessions. Other patterns reveal themselves and transform more gradually over time.

This work is not designed around chasing a breakthrough or forcing change. It is about creating change that is deep enough to become part of how you live.

Your experience will depend on what you are working through, your willingness to engage honestly with the process, and what unfolds along the way.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on before we begin?

Not at all.

Some clients arrive with a very clear challenge or transition they want to explore. Others simply know that something feels stuck, incomplete, or ready to change.

You do not need to arrive with the answer.

Discovering the deeper question is often part of the work.

How do I know if Esmeralda is the right coach for me?

The coaching relationship matters.

This work asks for honesty, openness, curiosity, and a willingness to look beneath the surface, so it is important that you feel both safe and challenged in the relationship.

An introductory conversation gives us the opportunity to explore what is bringing you to coaching, what you are looking for, and whether working together feels aligned for both of us.
